Today we are proud to reveal popular campaigner Katharine Macy has been selected to fight Selby and Ainsty at the General Election! On Saturday, Yorkshire and Humber MEP Shaffaq Mohammed visited Selby to announce Katharine as our candidate.
On Saturday, Yorkshire and Humber MEP Shaffaq Mohammed visited Selby to announce Katharine as our candidate.
Katharine is a postgraduate student at the University of York where she has lived for four years. She recently persuaded the national party to back a policy supporting young carers, based on her experience caring for her mother. She also works part-time and is a passionate advocate for young people in our area getting a better deal.
“Nigel Adams’ and Boris Johnson’s Conservative party has failed to pass its botched Brexit deal. The local Tories have shown how irresponsible they are, refusing to oppose a no-deal Brexit that could lead to half of all farms in the UK going bust.
“As MP for Selby and Ainsty, I will be a strong voice speaking up for families like mine, opposing a Brexit which will damage farming and the economy and working to get our government investing instead in underfunded schools and apprenticeships.”
Commenting, Shaffaq Mohammed Liberal Democrat MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber said:
“As someone who still works as a youth worker, helping young people into education and employment in some of the most deprived areas of Sheffield, I know how important it is to have people like Katharine elected to speak up for young people.
“We need voices like hers making sure our Member of Parliament is fighting cuts to school budgets and bringing jobs to the area, not recklessly backing a no-deal Brexit which will hurt the next generation.”
